Not sure how much money the City has right now for the program, but I know that it still exists. I would recommend getting in touch with them for more info. Follow the links in the article. The veterinarian that owns St Louis Veterinary Center at 1611 S Grand Blvd owns this property. Previously he operated the Pet Clinic next door to Hong Kong Express, across the street from the Pelican immediately north of Shenandoah on Grand.

Initially he planned to construct a building at Grand and Sidney for his veterinary practice, but was unable to work out a building plan with St. Louis City. Subsequently he bought the bank building at 1611 S Grand, and moved his practice there.

The property is not currently advertised for sale, but he plans to sell it “pretty soon…”

Well, most would say St. Louis Centre was doing well into the mid-1990s, which would give it a 10-year shelf life. So I wouldn’t say it was an immediate failure. Who knows – had the Galleria not been expanded in the early 1990s, we might still have a decently successful mall there today?

I like your idea of reusing the sign. While I could miss the old “PEVELY” I think it would be a nice touch. I just pray this thing doesn’t get torn down. Or that another “accidental” fire doesn’t happen.

This site would make an amazing renovation, and a signature piece for the SLU Campus. It could be an amazing campus building or a mixed-use village for students or employees. The university could even reuse the sign, replacing the “Pevely” with a big university sign that would be visible from all around.

Please reuse this building SLU! It would bring a lot of goodwill.

I have no doubt that a lot of great people live in the neighborhood, but you are right that is simply not my style. This was simply an editorial of my opinion. I am glad you like it. That said, since McBride never started "Phase 2" of the project, it could be considered somewhat of a failure. They timing wasn't the greatest, but the reality is that there is not a ton of demand for this style of property in the City. Now, Botanical Heights Phase 2 now being developed by UIC, seems like a better fit to me.

Have you been in the houses? Have you met the neighbors? Botanical Heights is a great neighborhood. The homes are a nice combination of the best of the old and the new to provide comfortable and desirable living and the diverse group are neighbors are the most kind welcoming group of people I have met since moving to St. Louis. May not be your style, but Botanical Heights is was a great thing for the City and the Botanical Height Neighborhood.
